Which Christian Colleges are Best?

Perhaps you know of someone who wants to attend a Christian college--but which schools will provide the best BIble-centered education? Sadly, for many schools, the fact of being known as a Christian college does not always mean that the teaching provided is Biblical. Some schools may integrate worldly ideas such as psychology into their teaching. Others may believe in theistic evolution (the idea that God used Darwinist evolution to create man). Unbiblical teachings like these can derail the Christian walk and weaken faith. LIFE Fellowship has conducted surveys of numerous Christian colleges to determine their positions on various issues. The results of these surveys are listed below. Our hope is that this resource can be of use to you in selecting the best Christian college for you or for someone you know. Below is an outline of LIFE Fellowship's position on the issues each school was surveyed on. Additionally, there is an outline of the questions each school was asked and an explanation of the ratings system used to rate each school. Finally, you will find a chart detailing the answers given by each school surveyed, along with the ratings received by each school.

Our Position:
We believe that Scripture is the basis for everything from which a Christian must always start, that is why it is given such a high ranking. When Christians believe that Scripture is inerrant or infallible only with such qualifiers such as "in matters of salvation and practice," then this places God's Word in the hands of man. This opens the door for us to pick and choose what we want to hear from God. This we believe is a horrible mistake.

The interpretation of Scripture is also very important, and we believe if Scripture is interpreted from distorted, so-called scientific methods that there is a question of whether any of the Bible can be trusted, such as the account of creation. Some Christians believe the account only so far, claiming literary license. But there are deep theological issues within the creation account. To subject the Word of God to the judgment of pseudo-science, which contradicts all scientific fact and method, makes us like the world, being fooled by the "wisdom" of man.

Lastly, we believe that Scripture and the Holy Spirit in a Christian's life is all-sufficient to meet the needs of the believer; emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. When the mind, emotions and spirit are thought to be distinguishable by human knowledge, it leads to a building up of human arrogance. Psychology, as seen by many colleges, is an empirical science. But according to the scientific method that psychologists cling to and call upon to support their positions, psychology is no more than a philosophy for meeting peoples needs. It reverts back to a Gnostic type of thinking that there is some hidden knowledge about ourselves that we must find. We believe that God would not allow His saints to be left without the tools of sanctification and the means to live a joyous life that is described in Scripture for almost 2000 years (II Pet. 1:3). God provided for the Apostles so that they were content (Phil 4:11), and there is no reason to believe that He does not provide for us today.

Questions Asked of Each School:
Each school surveyed was asked the following four questions:

1. Does your school believe that the Bible and psychology can be integrated?
2. Is Theistic Evolution permitted to be taught as a viable option in the interpretation of Genesis chapter 1?
3. What is your school's doctrinal postion?
4. Does your school teach the plenary, inerrant inspiration of the Holy Spirit of the original text of the Holy Bible?
5. What is your schools doctrinal position? A. Calvinistic B. Armenian C. Charismatic D. Other

Types of Theology:
For the question of each school's doctrinal position, four options were given, including Calvinism, Arminian, Charismatic, or Other. A brief description of these types of theology is as follows. These are simplistic descriptions of each type of theology. For a better understanding, we suggest that you research each type of theology more closely.
Calvinism: Emphasis on the sovereignty of God relating to salvation.
Armenian: Emphasis on man's choices in slavation.
Charismatic: Emphasis on experiencing the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Other: There are many other theological systems, some made up of mixes of the above three, and some which are completely different. We suggest again that you research the theological beliefs of any Christian school you are considering.

Ratings System
These ratings are based on colleges' responses and official dogmas that they hold to. This in no way reflects their place in the kingdom, but only is our interpretation of their beliefs. With this in mind, we rated each school based upon the answers they provided us, in view of our positions on each subject, using a scale of 1-10 with ten being the highest and 1 being the lowest. Based upon the ratings for each catergory, each school was also given an overall rating using an average between all the individual catergories. Our recommendations based upon the ratings of each school are as follows:
0-4 Poor rating. We do not recommend considering this school.
Many Serious Concerns
4.5-6.5 Weak rating. Only solid, strong willed believers who can't be easily shaken from their beliefs should consider this school. Many Strong Concerns
7-8.5 Fair rating. An alternative if better rated schools are not an option.
Numerous Concerns
9-9.5 Adequate rating. A good choice for Christian education.. Some concerns
10 Excellent Rating Recommended as the best choices for solid Christian education.
Little or No Concerns

Now that we've briefed you upon how how surveys and ratings system works, here is a listing of schools surveyed with their ratings.
